Welcome!

Hello! You have sucessfully arrived at the Animefan’s blog.

Now, for those of you who are totally confused about what this blog is and does, here a short introduction: First, this blog is NOT about my daily life, and it’s not an online diary. It’s not a developer day-to-day writings, and it’s not about daily news. What this blog really is about, is simple: I will add all the animes which i watch here. Expect that there is a new article every 3-5 days or so.

Since this is not to become another “What is this anime all about” I will divide every article into two sections: Spoilerfree, and spoiler-containing. Which means, that if you have already seen the anime, or do not mind getting the story spoiled, go to the spoiler-containing section. If not, go to the spoilerfree section. I will give a rating (from 1-12), and a descrption as to why I give this rating.

Please note: I kindly ask you to not post comments dealing with the rating I gave the anime. I know from past expierience that there is a lot of emotion in a rating of something. One person’s good is another person’s bad. If you do not agree with the rating, then please keep in mind that this is just my personal feeling about the anime. I am not some professional rater, nor a journalist or “Editor in chief” of some anime magazine. Thank you

As for all that, I hope you have fun here, maybe find some advice or new ideas on animes. Best of luck!

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh – Horror or Nonsense?

So, what is there to say about this anime. I heard from a lot of people that this is a really good anime. If you are one of these persons please do not judge me for what I am about to write on my opinion.
*sigh* Where to begin? First of all, I should say that this was about the worst anime I have ever seen. (Please see below for why), in both style and story, this is around the most ugly thing I ever had the bad luck of finding.

Short Summary:

The story begins in the future, where a group of scientists are reasearching some old ruins somwhere in the middle east. There, they find the tomb of “gilgamesh”. What they also find is something mysterious (which is as stupid as it sounds, and only is revealed much later in the anime), and for that decide to stop the reasearch. On that day, there is a huge explosion, pracitally everyone dies, and the sky is changed to a sort of mirror. So, no more blue sky, now it’s just a strange mirror.

The story mainly is about two protagonists: A younger brother and his elder sister (visible in the picture). They travel this strange world together, after their mother drank herself to death. They come across many strange creatures and “humans” if you can call them that.

Review: Spoilerless

This section is for those who do still wish to see the anime (even after the huge warning I am giving out for not watching it), and do not wish anything spoiled. From characters till atomsphere, the text is the same, only Story and ending differ.

  1. Story: I can only say one thing: H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. I forced myself to watch this anime from the start till the end, only to find out that the ending was even worse than all the rest.If for you, like me, the story is the most important, do NOT watch this anime, period. I can not recommend it to anyone whosoever who enjoys a good and fulfilling story. That’s all. (for more details, see the spoilercontaining section.
  2. Characters: Oh my god. When I saw that I just cried: What?!? several times, before realizing that the characters really were as bad as they looked. First of all, the good guys all have a lot of problems (mostly mental), and do nothing to hide them. Most of them are just slaves for the biggest part of the anime, and the others are bossy tyrants. So, all in all, nothing good there either.
  3. Sound and Music: You might think that a bad story and ending are the price for a super cool sound and graphis, but NO! The sound and music are just as bad as everything else. First of all, the music is really repeating itself over and over and over. You really get fed up with the unmelodic, strangely edgy music after around 3 episodes, which means they used it A LOT! Other than that, I don’t have much more to say to music and sound
  4. Graphics: Well, judge for yourself. If you like those kind of ugly faces and bleak background all the time, please don’t let me stop you for watching it. For everybody else: No, the anime is just as bad, and it STAYS that bad throughout, so don’t try watching it, hoping it will get any better.
  5. Atomsphere: Interestinly enough, the atmosphere was… Not as bad as the rest, which is still bad, but not that bad. It somewhat shows how bleak the world is with such an annoying sky, but it really doesn’t show much else. The funniest part: I think that it was never the goal of the creators to show how bleak the “sheltering sky” as it’s called, really is.

My final rating for this anime is:

0/12

Explanation:

Yeah, you might really think: Wow, that’s quite a bad rating. But truly, I haven’t found any worse anime ever since, so what can I say? It really deserves the worst rating I have ever given an anime.
That’s pretty much all I have to say about it. Avoid it like the pleague if you have a somewhat similar taste like me.

Review: Spoiler containing

This section is only for the ones which do not mind having the story spoiled (Don’t worry, you don’t miss out on a lot of good stuff!) So here we go.

  1. Story: I can only say: H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. I forced myself to watch it from the start till the end, although I was already fed up with the story at around episode 5, but it turns out that the ending was even worse. So what do I mean? First of all, the story starts out as incredibly confusing. You have no idea who the good guys and who the bad guys are. Then, when you finally figure that out, the story starts to get really really self-repeating and predictable. Someone tries something, the good guys come in to help, it fails, and everything is almost back to normal. They did insert a love story (no anime without a love story after all), but you can’t really call that love you just call it “longing after a bigger sister and having fun with some blond-haired girl while you wait for it”.
  2. Ending: I usually don’t write an extra point about the ending, but in this case it was necessary. Did you ever watch Neon Genesis Evangelion? The creators made the huge mistake of making a “somehwat decent anime” and then making a “really horrible ending”. This is what happend here, except for the decency part. The ending was, for crying out loud, the worst I ever saw. The bad guys win (I mean, what the hell?) All the good guys die, and everything they stood and fought for is completly smashed. The last remaining “good”, if you could ever call her that, turns to the bad guys, and even kisses the worst of the bad guys, and the world gets… What? Destroyed? Remade? Who the hell knows, but they sure like the scene in animes… Having a world destroyed and a new one made… All in all, just the worst trash I have ever seen
  3. Wonderful days

Wonderful days – The search for the blue sky

I am pleased to write today to what was known for a long time as the most expensive anime production of all times. And the thing which stunned most: It was created in korea, not in japan, the godfather of animes. Wonderful days, however, was not a series (I think that would have just costed too much), but rather a movie of around 1 1/2 hours length.

Basic summary:

The anime starts, where we might soon find ourselves in the future: Humanity didn’t control the pollution, and earth has become infested with it. Billions of people die during this horrible event. A few though are lucky, and save themselves to the gibraltar islands, where they build a near-magical city: Ecoban. This city has the power to gain energy from the surrounding pollution. However, as an unfortunate side effect, the entire air around it is constantly filled with dark clouds, and no one ever sees the sun or the sky, and it is almost constantly raining.
After many years, others arrive, who have survived the toxins, but the people of ecoban do not let them into the city, since they think they are “diseased”. The people of ecoban start to use them as cheap slaves for manual labor. Problems soon arrise when some of these start to revolt against the slavery.

  1. Story: Wonderfully made. I can just say that wonderful days has an incredible story. The search of the protagonist for the blue sky is an interesting theme, and is really well shown in the anime. (Also see point Atmosphere below). There was, sadly, one small drawback: The length. To much dismay, the creators of wonderful days pressed a little bit too much story into too little time. The 90 minutes or so the movie takes are just a little too short to adequatly show and present all the characters, the situation, etc. This is the only real drawback I have seen in the movie
  2. Characters: As mentioned above, they are really, really well made, but sadly there is also the drawback that there is not really much time to fully present them in any depth, since the story presses on quickly, without beeing able to fully show the characters. However, it must also be mentioned that most of the characters do not exhibit classical clichee traits, which further adds to the appeal of Wonderful Days
  3. Sound and Music: Beautiful, just beautiful. I cannot express how incredibly beautiful the music of wonderful days is (if you like calm and somewhat sad music). To give you a taste:
  4. Graphics: Well, like I said. It’s not called the most expensive anime creation for nothing. The graphics of this anime should, even if you have very high standards, just blow you away. Everything is held in stunning 3D, and the graphics beautifully contribute to the story and the atmosphere.
  5. Atmosphere: It was incredible, that’s for sure. The atmosphere in this movie was incredibly well made. Especially showing the dark, gloomy clouds hanging above the islands, making it impossible to see the beautiful blue sky which we are all too used to. It shows in what dull environment these persons have to live, and helps the story by showing how desperate one would become in such a bleach world.

My final Rating for this Anime is:

11 / 12

Explanation: I think that this anime has fully earned these insane 11 points. I also would almost have given it 12 / 12, but the main reason for me for only giving 11 points was simply that the story was a bit too compressed. It would have been much much better if this anime would have had around 7-10 episodes, fully showing and exploring the characters, the world they live in, ecoban, etc. However, for all the rest, I think this anime definetly deserves it’s place among one of the best. Thank you.

Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo – Crazy swordfighting and a rapping style!

Well, what would you guess from the picture up there? Would you ever think those two guys totally kick ass with a sword in hand? Oh do they ever in Samurai champloo. In this pretty interesting anime, Samurais are shown from a more diffrent side. Not honor-seeking, dusty old fellows, but crazy people swinging swords around and causing numerous untimely deaths. So a real alternative for any who are too bored about the old-skool stuff anyway.

Short summary:

The story begins in a rather usual tavern in a city, where the girl Fuu (I think it’s written like that ^^), serves all the dishes. (The lady to the right of the picture). Suddenly though, a really strange and awkward guy, wearing a red shirt, comes in (the guy in the center). It doesn’t take long till he starts a fight with a rather typical samurai (seen to the left in the picture). However, both get interrupted and put into jail. They are then visited by the girl Fuu, who proposes a deal: She will free them if they help her search for someone. They reluctantly agree, which is the start of a long and quite hideous journey with many twists and turns.

  1. Story: Well, what can I say? The story was delighting. From the start till the end it was really, really interesting, as to who the characters are, where they come from, and where they are going to. It is also interesting to discover which secrets Fuu is holding, and who the mysterious person she is looking for is. It also stays interesting, never gtting dull. However I have to say, that one thing did annoy me a little, and that was that some episodes were clearly fillers. They contribute nothing to the story or the character development, and are there, more or less, to take the anime to the length of 26 episodes.
  2. Characters: The characters were, contrary to my expcetations, very well made. Each of the characters had a characteristic background-story, which made the whole story all the more interesting, since you just die to see why the characters behave the way they do, and if what is visible on the surface is all they really are. Also, all characters find important things for them during their travels, which helps the depth of the characters.
  3. Sound and Music: The music used in Samurai champloo is often a bit “Hip Hop style”. Of course, not everyone likes that, but I should mention that it really fits some of the style of the characters and that it is not overexcessive. As I said, it’s only hip hop- “style”. You almost never hear anyone rap, and much of the other music is classically “anime-music”. So, even if you don’t really like hip hop, you don’t have to worry about getting bombarded with it, but it is present, if you have panic attacks from this music style.
  4. Graphics: Compaed to many other animes, the graphics are quite cool. They are again in a very specific style, as you can see on the picture above, with sometimes rather amusing outlines, but they are good nontheless. The colors are quite clear, and the outlines sharp and detailed. Again, this is a style which can be debated over for years if it’s good or bad. Personally, I’d say that the animators did a great job.
  5. Atmosphere: The atmosphere is quite ok in the anime. I think that it is well done actually, since you can really feel the danger, or the relaxation, depending on what the characters are doing. The key moments are really captivating, and never get boring or predictable. The anime inspires hate, love, fear, anxiousness, sadness, or happiness brilliantly.

My final Rating for thisAnime:

10/12

Explanation: If I look only at the story, the graphics, the music etc. This anime would probably get an 11,5 or something similar. The only problem with this anime, is that it has just too many filler episodes to be good. Some filler episodes were somewhat funny, but some were just plain stupid. However, I should mention that I am nontheless glad, that this is not one of the animes where the fillers were independant from the story, and where the authors didn’t suddenly start to go berserk and kill the good story with forced episodes. So, this anime receives 10 / 12. Thank you
